Cheverly Town Hall Meeting on 2/14

I unfortunately missed the town hall meeting on 2/14, but fortunately it is videoed and available for all to watch on our town website here http://cheverlymd.swagit.com/play/02152019-558 . Beth McKenzie, also took the time to help us with cliff notes here https://mailchi.mp/64718bc2b0d6/feb-14-town-meeting-notes?fbclid=IwAR1g6N9OwmI0XPXUgFptq6I4OuxDWwe6dg22a2pHHLMagjK2B1uzDpAqNP8. But I wanted to touch on two important moments from that night.
Dana Holman gave a heartfelt and powerful message that I find to be so on the money and aligned with the very reason for the inception of One Cheverly-
“Cheverly’s greatest asset is our people and our diversity. We make our town stronger by embracing and leveraging our many qualities. We make our town stronger by standing together to address issues that impact all of us. I have found that residents regardless of how they look, who they love, how they worship, their ability or their disability, or how much money they make agree on the following key issues:
1.       They want great communication and transparency in their town governance and town service delivery
2.       They want to know that their community is a safe place to live
3.       They want to know that all residents are being treated fairly, justly, and with respect when interacting with town staff and officials
4.       They want to know that their representatives are effectively managing the town budget and putting their tax dollars to good use.
5.       They want to know their leaders have a vision and a plan for carrying out that vision.
6.       They want economic development that is focused on the needs of people and the environment.
I believe that the town’s leadership together with engaged citizens from all of our diverse communities will move Cheverly forward. I believe our community thrives when we have open and honest conversations and work together to solve issues. I believe that what impacts one of us, impacts all of us.”
Murielle Stewart later gave a beautiful and brave statement about her need to step down from the council. She explained that she is in a current battle with her own mental health, specifically panic attacks and depression.  But then went on to share words we all should put into our hearts and keep with us for when the moment of need should arise.
“Bringing your thing into the light removes its power. You are not alone. Do not be ashamed. Know the darkness is temporary. Know that you are a light, even when you feel overwhelmed. Asking for help is truly an act of bravery and speak up even though your voice may shake.”
I am so inspired that she understood there is no shame in admitting a personal struggle with mental health. Whether one may struggle based on internal or external forces…no one is in control of anything but for how they respond to a challenge of this kind and her example is one we should all follow in my opinion.

Please watch them speak, it will move you!!
